NDIS employment support Queensland
If you’re an NDIS participant in Queensland who wants to work, your plan may already contain the funding to help you get there. The challenge is knowing where to look, what to ask for, and how to find the right provider.
This post walks you through the practical steps — from understanding your plan through to engaging support.
Step 1 — Know which budget line covers employment
Employment support in the NDIS sits under Capacity Building, specifically the Finding and Keeping a Job support category. This is different from your Core supports budget (which covers day-to-day assistance) and your Support Coordination budget.
Look for it in your plan under Capacity Building supports. If you see a line item referencing Finding and keeping a job- that’s it. If you don’t see it and employment is a goal you care about, read on.
Step 2 — If you don’t have it, request it at your plan review
Employment funding isn’t automatically included in every NDIS plan. You need to have employment as an explicit goal in your plan for the funding to be allocated.
If your current plan doesn’t include it, you have two options: wait for your scheduled plan review and raise it then, or request an unscheduled review if your circumstances have changed and employment has become an immediate goal (although, anyone who knows this process, knows this isn’t a preferred option).
When you go into that conversation, come prepared. Have a clear goal statement, know what kind of support you’re looking for, and ideally have a provider in mind who can confirm what their program involves and what it costs. This makes the planner’s job easier and gives your request more weight, especially if you have a prepared quotation.
Step 3 — Choose a registered NDIS provider
When choosing a provider, look for NDIS registration, relevant qualifications (vocational rehabilitation, counselling, or allied health who has experience in occupational rehabilitation or DES), a clear program structure, and small caseloads so you actually get individual attention.
At Stable & Grounded, we’re a registered NDIS provider (registration number 4-KZ5ALG8) delivering employment support across South East Queensland — including Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Toowoomba, and surrounds. We do offer telehealth where accessible and appropriate for wider locations. Our lead clinician, Brittany, holds dual registration as a Rehabilitation Counsellor and Counsellor, with specialist expertise in disability and occupational rehabilitation.
Step 4 — Book an intake call before you commit
A good provider will always offer an intake or discovery call before you sign a service agreement. Use this to ask about program structure, caseload size, how they tailor their approach, and what a typical session looks like.
Red flags to watch for: vague program descriptions, large group delivery with no individual support, no clear outcome framework, or pressure to sign before you’ve had your questions answered.
Step 5 — Get your service agreement in place
Once you’ve chosen a provider, you’ll sign a service agreement that outlines the supports to be delivered, the cost per session, and the total budget to be drawn from your plan. Make sure this is in place before your first session — it protects both you and the provider.
If you’re in Queensland and want to talk through whether your plan includes employment funding, or whether the Work Ready Launch Pad might be the right fit for your goals, we’d love to hear from you.
